2010 Car of the Year – disappointment

VW Polo - Car of the year 2010
It’s been a while since I wrote anything… Busy time. Sorry for this silence. Some editorials will be here shortly. But for today… I just bumped into the “2010 Car of the year award” info on some website. And I’m shocked…The winner: VW Polo?
Car of the year award is considered to be “the Oscar” of auto industry. Group of 59 experts (auto journalists) from 23 countries, vote for the best car of the year. It’s that simple. But… in case of this year’s choice, if You check the particular points assigned to all of the nominated cars (here), You will see the problem.
Is that really the point? I don’t deny that it’s a decent car. It’s a VW. As always… well built, practical, pretty good (but conservative) looking, modern, drives good, is little overpriced… and terribly boring. It doesn’t bring anything new.
Among other nominees: You have Toyota iQ – “revolutionary” small city car. Opel (Vauxhall) Astra, with all these smart optional equipment (and the looks!). Skoda Yeti – what is a kind of a new segment definition and something You wouldn’t expect to see from this conservative car maker. And still You could find 50 other choices outside final 7.
And they gave it to some german little car. That is as passionate as their cuisine… I know that it’s been a difficult year for this industry. I was expecting some horrid hybrid to win… Fortunately it didn’t happen. But even among the few interesting nominees there were, better (=more unique, characteristic) choice could be made.
My vote? I wanted to go for Astra (as this is a good looking hatchback – and my favourite segment)… but I would choose Toyota iQ.
