Toybaru: Subaru still badder than Toyota

It’s been a while without any post. It’s just that, there actually were not many interesting news to write about recently (?) World went crazy for EVs, which aren’t quite my point of interest. Reading about another huge hybrid from BMW, Mercedes or Lexus are pretty boring. Hot hatches segment seems to be old-fashioned somehow… Too cheap to be hybrids… Too expensive during the “global crisis”…

But there is a light of hope. More news on Toybaru have just arrived… and they are promising.

Just as Toyota’s version (FT-86) of Toybaru was presented at the Tokyo Motor show, Subaru followed. We have more confirmed information about their version of the car.

I was pretty worried about the whole cooperation of these two. It seemed like Subaru was on loosing position: Toyota has all the market share, brains and designers, found it cheaper to buy “performance” from Subaru than to build their own – and just like that… they got a sports car. The idea that it will be sold under two brands – wasn’t promising for the other contributor. The rumoured differences were only about the design and that – as we all know – isn’t Subaru’s strong point.

But it was now confirmed that the differences will be more than this. These two producers found win – win solution. Subaru won’t loose their image on this one as it will be All Wheel Drive (Toyota will be RWD only)!

Subaru version will be a little bigger and heavier (4WD weights…). The dimensions are pretty close to Impreza’s so probably we will see many common parts there.

The looks? It’s hard to admit, but I like the Toyota desing more. But at least Subaru will keep the hood scoop… hopefully…

Confirmation about the engine was also made: it will be 2.0 liter turbocharged engine known from WRX STi (EJ20). It will be delivered in 2 versions: 250 PS and 308 PS.

And finally: the price. With the “badder” image, comes bigger costs (4WD costs…). Subaru will be about 20% more expensive than Toyota :(
