9 things that piss me off when driving to work

We all get up in the morning (that fact itself is annoying), do our morning routine, get in the car, and drive to work. I don’t know about You, but in the morning for the first half an hour or so, I’m a person that hardly talks. I don’t talk because if I would, it would be shouting at other people or things (“You… stupid elevator door!!!”).

Although I’m aware of this fact and try to calm it down, there are some things that still annoy me when I drive to work.

Traffic

Looks familiar?

1. Cyclists

Let’s start with our “green” friends. Many years ago, when there was hardly any traffic and ecology was something that tree huggers did somewhere and nobody heard about it, cyclists kept themselves on the side walks. Cars and bicycles lived together in harmony.

Now when there’s more cars. And considering Yourself as “green” is fashionable, cool and important, they positioned themselves as a regular road users, and feel free to ride the bike on the most jammed bridge in the city at 10 miles per hour. And there’s no way to pass them by. At the same time, the side walk is empty. Of course they will show You the finger when You forget to make them room to fit between cars, when You’re at the traffic lights. But it doesn’t work the other way somehow.

And one more thing: Why do they tend to wear these silly tight shorts? Do they really believe they’ll help them with aerodynamics? Loose 50 lbs, that will help triple: besides aerodynamics, You won’t look like a clown in Your shorts and You’re bike seat will thank You.

2. Green light sleepers

Hardly anything is more annoying than a car in front of You that don’t start as soon as the light turns green. C’mon it won’t get any greener!

Some people say that the shortest time unit in physics, is the time between: the traffic light to turn green and You hear a horn from behind. It still doesn’t seem to help to wake them up, and make them move.

3. Skoda drivers

Mostly connected with point 2. But are way more versatile…

They will always find a way to surprise You with their manoeuvring talents. You drive the car for 3, 5, 10, 20 years… You’ve done 100k, 200k miles driving. You think You’ve seen it all. But no…

Meet the Skoda driver. I really believe that there is some special school for them. They will surprise You any way they can. They’ll make the roundabaut traffic turn the other way. They’ll turn around every time when You least expect it and in most absurd place. And when You’ll tell them something through the window (politely of course ;) ), they’ll find it as a invitation for discussion – get out of the car, and come for You for a little chat. So what, that the whole city is waiting…

Best to avoid them.

4. Road work, planned precisely to jam the city

I travel pretty much. Whether this is around Poland or Europe. Even in US or Canada (I spent there over 6 months). The city authorities always plan the road/construction works, the way to block the most crucial streets and places at the same time. Like for example now in Warsaw – one of the bridges is closed. It would be reasonable to redirect the traffic, change the lights duration, so it would be somehow easier to avoid this bridge for drivers. But no… They closed some other crossings for road work. Looks like the people that plan all this mess around the cities… are cyclists? “Let’s block the city, we have a crisis anyway, people shouldn’t drive so much”.

5. SUV drivers, that just don’t care

The bigger the car, the smaller…

Road culture.

There is some obvious connection that: Audi Q7, or Cayennes or other SUV drivers just feel as they can do whatever they want and cut in any line, at any moment. They blink the lights, tailgate, brake suddenly…

Well, there are bus lines open in rush hours… Maybe they’ve mistaken cars they drive with public transport?

6. Scary weather?

The city speed limit is low (50 km/h -35 miles/h). So You wouldn’t expect the drivers to act differently when it’s sunny and raining. You go slow any way, so the rain shouldn’t scare you. But no… People get paralysed behind the wheel, when few drops of water hits their roof. And I’m not talking about below zero temperatures, icing, blizzards… No… Just a light summer rain, and the regular traffic gets multiplied by 2.

7. Nose picking men

Sitting in their cars at the traffic lights. Anonymous. Feeling invisible… Cmon, we go the same way every day. We meet 2-5 times a week, at the same traffic lights. Leave that work for the four walls of Your bathroom. If we will meet by coincidence in the shop or worst: doing business – will I want to shake his hand before the meeting? :)

8. Watch out for girl driving

If a girl is driving a Skoda, run away fast! If she’s doing make up accordingly – call the police! When women are driving the road and the wheel is at fourth place of priorities.

  • First priority: to look good
  • Second: to look good when driving by another woman
  • Third: to look good when driving by a handsome man
  • Fourth: to talk on the mobile
  • Fifth: drive safely

9. Why am I going there anyway?

The ultimate question arises. 5 days a week, we spend about 2 hours daily in the car. Everyday in rush hours… Why am I going to work anyway?

That’s it… I need a vacation :)

What do You think? Is there anything MORE annoying to comment on?

To calm you down in the morning, if you can get up an hour earlier and do some exercises at home. I do dance exercise to music, good for your heart, your body weight, and your mind. If you can add some yoga and pilates on alternate days, but always in the morning before anything else. It lifts your spirits, and put you in a good mood, because it carries you all through the day. And top it off with a good breakfast!

So when you get on the road, you will be in a better mood, and probably humming along to the radio instead of getting mad. Try it, it works!
