Toyota and other logos… What is their meaning?

Toyota LogoIn this post let’s take a look at Toyota logo. First impression: it looks good, has all the “good logo” aspects: simple, easy to draw, and nice looking. IMHO better than Hyundai or Mazda. It has more weight… But there’s more explanation from company about it’s “meaning”.

Lets start with some competition and look at their logos and their meanings…

Let’s say:

Pepsi – no connection with the name or it’s slogans. It’s just pure and simple. Good looking though…

Apple – its pretty straight forward :) You see the logo, You know the name :) Cool…

BMW – You see the relation to the history of the company: aeronautics. The blue/white centre symbolizes rotating plane propeller spinning. I buy that…

Audi – also historical -> 4 circles = 4 brands that connected and created the company (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) in 1932.

And… Toyota:

When I see the logo, I see the nice round shape that hides inside the letters creating the name: TOYOTA. Great idea (needs a little imagination to see this, but it actually is)… Some other people say that this is a styled “T” letter. For others: cowboy in a hat… Little far from the topic, but ok :) I would easily put the logo at the same shelf like VW (similar concept?)

But no… The official explanation is:

The current Toyota Mark consists of three ovals: the two perpendicular center ovals represent a relationship of mutual trust between the customer and Toyota. These ovals combine to symbolize the letter “T” for Toyota. The space in the background implies a global expansion of Toyota’s technology and unlimited potential for the future.

Cmon… How lame is that? They should also add some world peace, preventing some African people starvation and ecology to the logo explanation. “Save the cheerleader – save the world!” It would fit in the “space in the background”… For me this all sounds just buffoon… Sorry…

Have own thoughts? Please leave a comment.
